BJH Journalism Wins at ASPA

Bryant Junior High Media won 69 awards at Arkansas Scholastic Press Association.  Among the top awards, The Occurrence, The Blue and White, Swarm Productions, and Dynamic all earned a Superior in General Excellence and went on to be ranked All-Arkansas.  

Individually, Isai Perez won Broadcast Producer of the Year, Khloe King won Business Manager of the Year, Ivana Wang won Newspaper Writer of the Year, Katie Wright won runner-up, Wright won Newspaper Editor of the Year and Annabel Odom won runner-up. To win an Of-the-Year award, students must create a comprehensive portfolio of their work.  

For mail-in competitions, one piece of work done throughout the year for each category is judged.  The following students won for mail-ins:

  • The broadcast staff, Swarm Productions, won an Excellent for Broadcast Monthly Show

  • Aubrey Ellis won a Superior for Broadcast Human Interest/Serious Feature

  • Perez, Katlyn Ridgell and Andrew Schlesier won a Superior in Broadcast Sports Package

  • Livi Miller and Schlesier won a Superior for Broadcast Show Opening

  • Donovan Covington won an Excellent for Film Screenplay

  • Schlesier won an Honorable Mention for Short Narrative Film

  • Ellis, Miller and Hannah Heston won an Honorable Mention for Narrative Film  

  • Perez won an Excellent for Narrative Film

  • Covington won an Honorable Mention for Experimental Film

  • Swarm Productions staff won an Excellent for Commercial

  • Miller and Bella Simoneaux won an Excellent for Commercial

  • Elijah Ransdell won an Excellent for Public Service Announcement

  • Schlesier won an Excellent for Animation and Stop Motion

  • Simoneaux won a Superior for Animation and Stop Motion

  • The literary magazine staff, Dynamic, won a Superior for Literary magazine Thematic Development

  • Wang and Gabrielle Smith won an Excellent for Print Newspaper News Story

  • Wang and Addison Warford won an Excellent for Print Newspaper Personality Profile

  • A. Roe won a Superior for Environmental Portrait; this entry was also named Best of ASPA

  • The newspaper staff, The Occurrence, won an Honorable Mention for Newspaper Front Page Design

  • Dexter Lowery won an Honorable Mention for Newspaper Opinion Page Design

  • Karrington Samuel won a Superior in Yearbook Special Coverage

  • Jenna James won a Superior in Yearbook Academic Layout; this entry was also named Best of ASPA

  • Xoe Hawkins, Alanna Hill and Rylee McKinney won a Superior in Yearbook Advertising Layout

  • Kaylee Anderson won an Excellent in Student Life Photograph

  • Erin Wright won an Excellent in Clubs Photograph

  • Lexie Metheny won an Honorable Mention in Theme Photograph
