Several Bryant High School students participated in the 2025 Arkansas Boys and Girls State programs, gaining hands-on experience in state and local government. Held at the University of Central Arkansas and Harding University, these weeklong programs allowed students to run for office, attend legislative sessions, and network with peers and professionals across the state.
At Arkansas Girls State, Mihaela Peret served as City Attorney and State Delegate. She said she was nervous at first but found the program focused more on women’s role in shaping the future than she expected. “It was truly a blessing to meet such incredible and successful girls from around Arkansas,” she said. Kennedy Henton was elected City Secretary and State Associate Justice. She said speaking in front of 700 delegates improved her public speaking and writing skills. Kyla Johnson also represented Bryant during the session.
Donovan Covington said he didn’t expect such a fun and impactful week at Boys State. “I made many connections, played in the band, and ran for County Judge and Lieutenant Governor,” he said. Although he did not win the elections, he gained valuable insight into leadership and advocacy. Ryan Young served in multiple roles, including City Council Position 4 for Kelley City and as a mock Senate candidate where he discussed men’s mental health. He was also invited to the UCA football training camp and received an offer from a coach. Marian Budu was elected Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and described the experience of speaking in front of over 600 delegates as life-changing.
David Salinas, who served as Bush City Mayor and Boys Nation Alternate, said Boys State gave him the confidence to speak and lead in large group settings. Nash Newton and Bryson Hardin were both elected to the House of Representatives, with Hardin noting that debating bills gave him a deeper understanding of government. Van Thomas II was elected County Sheriff of Womack County, competed in the Boys State football tournament, and said the program allowed him to improve his communication and public speaking. Matthew Bennett participated in the Sustainability Committee and Boys State Choir and called the State Capitol tour a highlight of the week.
All students expressed appreciation for the chance to represent Bryant High School. They gained leadership experience, built new relationships, and learned more about how government functions at multiple levels.
