Every school day, staff and students across the district see a friendly face delivering mail, packages, and messages between campuses - Will Fippen, Bryant Public Schools’ district mail courier. What many may not know, however, is that behind his quiet dedication is a remarkable 38-year military career.
Fippen’s journey began shortly after graduating high school. With a strong family history of military service—his father served in the U.S. Air Force and many relatives also enlisted—he felt drawn toward the same calling. Just as importantly, he knew he wanted to build a foundation for his future.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1980, at the age of nineteen. He completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, before moving on to Advanced Individual Training at Fort Eustis, Virginia. There, he trained in the aviation branch as an aircraft electrician, responsible for maintaining electrical systems on both rotary and fixed-wing Army aircraft.
Fippen’s first duty assignment was with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He later served with the 172nd Infantry Brigade at Fort Richardson, Alaska, and concluded his active-duty service at Fort Polk, Louisiana. In 1994, after more than thirteen years on active duty, he joined the Arkansas Army National Guard, where he continued to serve until his retirement in 2018. His career spans over 38 years of military service.
One experience during his time in Alaska stands out most clearly in his memory. While stationed at Fort Richardson, Fippen completed the Army Air Assault Course, a demanding two-week training known for its intense physical and mental challenges. The course pushed him to discover a deeper strength and confidence: qualities that he says have guided him ever since.
While serving, Fippen earned his Associate degree in Electronics Engineering Technology and his Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, achievements he once believed might not have been possible for himself.
Over the years, he developed personal values that remain central to who he is today: taking pride in even the smallest tasks, doing what is right even when no one is watching, asking questions when learning, treating every person with respect and compassion, and always being true to oneself. Working alongside people from many different backgrounds helped him understand and appreciate the unique experiences each person carries.
As Veterans Day approaches, Fippen reflects on what the day means to him. It is a time to honor the men and women, past and present, who have answered the call of duty and protected the freedoms we hold today. He is reminded of the phrase, “All gave some, but some gave all,” and takes time to remember the many brothers and sisters in arms he served alongside.
His message to our community is heartfelt: If you know a veteran, take a moment to say “thank you.” The gesture may be small, but its meaning runs deep.
We are honored to recognize Will Fippen—not only for the service he provides to Bryant Public Schools each day, but for the decades he dedicated to serving our country.
Thank you, Mr. Fippen, for your service.
