Donaven Sims, BEMS Principal

During National Principals Month, we’re celebrating what it means to Experience Bryant through the eyes of our principals.

For Donaven Sims, principal of Bethel Middle School, the campus is filled with memories and meaningful connections. From the football field where he began as a coach to Thanksgiving meals that bring students and families together, the people and traditions make Bethel feel like home.

What makes your campus special to you?
I was a part of Bryant when our school first opened, so I have had the opportunity to watch it grow and become what it is today. I also love our setting out in the country. There is something about it that feels like home and reminds me of growing up in Kingsland. That connection, along with the people who make up our school community, makes this campus a special place to me.

Share one thing you want families to know about your school this year.
I want our families to know how much the people in this building care about their kids. We have a great group of adults who show up every day wanting to do what is best for our students. We do not always get everything right, but our hearts are in the right place, and we are all pulling in the same direction. We want this to be a place where our kids feel known, cared for, and proud to call their school.

What is your favorite school tradition?
I love our Thanksgiving meal days when our families come and eat with their kids. There is just something special about having so many of our families in the building with us. I always enjoy seeing everyone together and the sense of community it brings to our school.

Where is a place on campus you love?
I love the football field. It is where I began coaching so many years ago, and I spent a lot of time on that field. There are so many great memories tied to it. Walking out there always reminds me of where I started and how much this school has become a part of my life.

What is something your students do that makes you proud?
Honestly, it is when our students come back years later and talk about what their time here meant to them. Knowing that we made a difference and that coming back here still feels a little like coming home means a lot to me.

What do you enjoy most about leading your school?
The people. I truly enjoy coming to work every day and being around our students and staff. The relationships built over the years mean a lot to me; our people are what make Bethel feel like home.
